Alice Kyburg, Ph.D., M.ED., director, Tutor, Math, SAT/ACT

Dr. Alice Kyburg has a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science from the University of Rochester and an M.Ed. in Middle and High School Math Education from UMASS Amherst.  She earned  Mass-certification  for High School Math and English as a Second Language (ELL). Alice has taught at the University of Wisconsin for 23 years.  She is now an island resident living in West Tisbury, and the mother of two rising Seniors.  Her husband is a partner at Gannon & Benjamin Marine Railway in Vineyard Haven. She and her family enjoy sailing and living aboard their sailboat during the summer months.

Alice specializes in math tutoring, both grade-level and enrichment, and SAT, ACT, SSAT and ISEE test preparation.  

 

LizZY, M.ED., Tutor - Wilson Reading Specialist

Lizzy is a certified Wilson Reading specialist who applies Wilson techniques (an off-shoot of the Orton Gillingham program) in all of her reading lessons.  She grew up bilingual, and speaks French and English.  She holds a degree in education and an MA in literacy instruction.  She has taught reading and English Language Learning for public schools, as well as family and consumer science, yoga, a Capella singing, and farming and gardening.  Her passion for helping children overcome difficulty and discover the student within are dual motivations for her educational practice and philosophy.

Angela, M.ED., TUTOR – special education specialist, ELEMENTARY MATH, READING, & WRITING

Angela has a dual BA degree in Inclusive Elementary Education and Psychology from Nazareth College in Rochester NY, and an M.Ed. in Elementary Education with Certification in Special Education from UMass Boston.  She has a second M.Ed. from UMASS Boston in Vision Studies with Certification in Orientation and Mobility.  Angela has vast experience working with students who have learning and behavioral disabilities.  She enjoys getting students excited about learning and teaching them organizational strategies. Angela loves outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, and going to the beach.

Jackie, M.Ed., tutor - special education (K-12), reading, math (k-8), Science, high school support

Jackie has broad experience as a tutor. She began her Vineyard teaching career as a special eduction teacher at West Tisbury School. She also taught 4th grade. Jackie has been trained in many different reading methods and uses her many years of experience to choose what is most effective for each student. Most recently Jackie taught High School Science, expanding her area of expertise to include the coaching of High School students. Jackie and her husband raised their two children on Martha’s Vineyard. Besides teaching, Jackie’s main passion is gardening.

Amanda Blum, M.ed., certified Orton Gillingham reading specialist, Tutor - SPecial Education (K-5)

While Amanda’s main focus is as a certified Orton Gillingham reading specialist, Amanda tutors in all K-5 subjects.

Mr. Bacon, M. ED., High School/College WRiting specialist, Exceptional coach for college application essays.

Claire Anacreon, M.ED., writing specialist, Tutor - All Grades. Exceptional Coach for College Application Essays.

Claire is a former Montessori teacher and a passionate writing tutor. She works with students of all ages on writing. Her broad experience ranges from supporting dyslexic students and others with different learning styles to offering enrichment writing to enthusiastic writers seeking more. She enjoys working with students on their College application essays and can be a great help both for those having trouble getting started as well as those seeking final touches.
